ZoneDAS Two

Fibre-based Active DAS for multi-operator 4G & 5G indoor coverage

ZoneDAS Two is part of Zyxel’s Active DAS (Distributed Antenna System) family and is a fibre-based solution designed to bring reliable 4G and 5G coverage deeper into medium-to-large buildings, campuses and complex sites.

At Madison Connectivity, we pair ZoneDAS Two with approved RF sources – then support the fibre and antenna layout around your specific building and compliance requirements.

Why choose ZoneDAS Two?

Fibre-based Active DAS, built for 4G & 5G

ZoneDAS Two uses fibre cabling between the Base Unit (BU) and Remote Units (RU), with local RF conversion at each RU. That means:

  • Less signal loss across long runs and vertical risers

  • More predictable output power at each service point

  • Easier routing through modern risers and pathways than heavy coax

Instead of pushing mobile signal through long coaxial runs and splitters, ZoneDAS Two transports RF over fibre to compact Remote Units (RUs) positioned where coverage is actually needed – a bit like placing Wi-Fi access points. The result is more even coverage, easier expansion and a clearer path to multi-operator, 4G and 5G in-building coverage.

ZoneDAS Two supports multi-operator 4G and 5G NR, including high-capacity mid-band 5G (n78) with 2×2 MIMO and flexible selection of 4G bands – all within a single, centrally managed system.

Scalable from a few zones to large footprints

A single ZoneDAS Two Base Unit can support multiple Remote Units directly, with optional Expander Units allowing you to scale out coverage as the building or project grows. Depending on the design, you can support up to 128 Remote Units from a central head-end, covering large office floors, multi-level car parks or mixed-use precincts from one fibre-fed platform.

Because every RU is active, the system can compensate for path loss and keep output power consistent, even at the farthest points in the network.

Multi-operator, neutral-host ready

ZoneDAS Two is designed for multi-operator scenarios. It supports multiple 4G/5G bands and accepts RF from a range of approved sources – so you can align the Base Unit (head-end) design with each network’s preferred approach while using a shared DAS layer throughout the building.

ZoneDAS Two is an ideal solution for:

  • Commercial towers and campuses with multiple tenants

  • Hospitals and healthcare facilities

  • Multi-story car parks
  • Retail centres and mixed-use developments

  • Education and precinct-style sites

How ZoneDAS Two works

A ZoneDAS Two deployment has three main elements:

  1. Base Units – the head-end of the DAS

  2. Expander Units – used where the number of RU’s exceeds the Base Unit capacity

  3. Remote Units – the active service antennas in the building

Signal from the chosen RF source is fed into the Base Unit, and then transported over fibre to Remote Units throughout the building. Each RU converts the fibre signal back to RF and serves mobiles in its local zone.

System Components

Base Units – the heart of the ZoneDAS Two platform

The ZoneDAS Two Base Unit (BU) sits in a central comms room or MDF and acts as the controller and RF hub of the system. It:

  • Accepts RF from multiple signal sources (e.g. BTS, small cells, ORAN), with support for up to four signal sources per band

  • Digitises and combines the bands for onward transport over fibre

  • Manages gain, auto-levelling and per-zone power settings

  • Provides an Ethernet port for local and remote web-based management

From each Base Unit, fibre links run out to Remote Units either directly, or via Expander Units where more coverage points are required.

In practical terms: think of the Base Unit as the “Wi-Fi controller” of the DAS – it concentrates the carrier signals, powers the downstream nodes and gives you a single pane of glass for the whole ZoneDAS network.

System Components

Expander Units – scale-out and reach

Expander Units (sometimes referred to as extenders) are free-standing modules that sit between the Base Unit and Remote Units when you need:

  • More RUs than a single Base Unit can support directly

  • Longer reach to remote areas, higher floors

  • Intermediate aggregation points in large or complex risers

Key roles of Expander Units:

  • Fan-out: a single fibre port from the Base Unit can be turned into multiple additional RU ports via an Expander, significantly increasing the number of service points available from one BU.

  • Distance extension: each Expander effectively adds another hop, extending the allowable fibre distance while maintaining signal quality.

  • Flexible topology: expanders can be positioned to suit the building layout – for example, one per wing, per tower or per plant room – so cabling is kept logical and easy to maintain.

With the right combination of Base Unit and Expander Units, ZoneDAS Two can be scaled to dozens or even over a hundred RUs across a large building or campus.

System Components

Remote Units – active antennas in the ceiling

Remote Units (RUs) are the “last metre” of the ZoneDAS Two system – compact, ceiling-mounted active antennas that convert the fibre or hybrid-fibre feed back into RF for nearby devices.

Each RU:

  • Contains its own amplification and RF modules, so output power and bands can be configured per zone

  • Supports 4G and 5G NR (including n78 2×2 MIMO) within the bands allocated by the Base Unit configuration

  • Can be powered via local AC/DC or via hybrid fibre power-feeding, reducing the need for local power in every ceiling space

  • Acts much like a Wi-Fi access point from a planning perspective – you simply place RUs where you need coverage and capacity, not where coaxial rules allow

Because each RU is an active device, the system can precisely control power and balance coverage between zones – which is particularly important for high-frequency 5G where path loss is higher than traditional 4G.

Where ZoneDAS Two fits

ZoneDAS Two is ideal for buildings that have moved beyond what a simple passive repeater network can comfortably handle and need a more structured, fibre-based approach to indoor coverage. Typical use cases include:

  • Medium–large commercial offices

  • Multi level car parks
  • Hospitals and aged-care facilities

  • Shopping centres and mixed-use developments

  • Education campuses and precinct-style sites

  • Sites needing multi-operator coverage with room to grow

ZoneDAS Two is particularly well suited to projects where you:

  • Want a single DAS to serve multiple operators

  • Need to carry 4G and 5G over the same infrastructure

  • Require a scalable, fibre-based topology that can be extended as buildings are upgraded or expanded

  • Need web-based monitoring and configuration for ongoing optimisation and support
